The Shrublands Estate Conservation Area

Our website is intended to give existing and potential residents a taste of what makes Shrublands a highly desirable place to live.

Located in the green and pleasant neighbourhood of Furnace Green, in Crawley and built next to Tilgate Forest and Tilgate golf course, Shrublands provides a superior solution to modern living. The development is an award-winning design from one of Britain’s leading architectural practices PRP Architects (formerly Phippen, Randell, and Parks). Their solution was to design a development of linked, rather than conventionally terraced housing that compliment the attractive location. The estate comprises Sharon Close, Linden Close & Laurel Close, which as the names suggest do not have any through traffic.

On Shrublands, each house shares a party wall with its neighbour along part of its length. This means that they are more open in plan and aspect than more conventional houses, giving generous amounts of space, light, quiet and privacy.  In fact, residents have become used to the comments of surprised visitors and guests on the airiness and space within each home. The estate is arranged around an attractive communal garden area, well-planted and maintained by a professional gardener.

So successful was the Shrublands development, that PRP Architects were later commissioned to design the neighbouring Forestfield Estate, which followed many of the same design principals established for Shrublands. The two developments share a tennis court and a licensed clubhouse.

Shrublands is not simply a collection of individual houses, but an integrated development which looks exceptional in comparison to more conventionally planned estates.  It is also a lovely place offering a safe environment for children and the elderly. There is a true sense of community here, whilst also offering a high degree of privacy. Conceived in the 1960’s, the estate was one of the forerunners of today’s most “modern” architecture.  In fact, the architectural merit of both developments was recognised in 19XX, when they were awarded Conservation Area status.

Despite offering its residents a haven from the outside world, that world is actually very near-at-hand.  There are local schools and shops and other amenities in abundance almost on the doorstep. Apart from the Golf Courses (18 + 9 holes and a driving range) there is Tilgate Park with its beautiful lake and Crawley’s new K2 Leisure Centre and National Cycle Way routes too. Full Medical and Dental Services are also available within strolling distance.
